I recently activated an at&t sim card with 3G to use with my Iphone when traveling to the united states following this steps:

requirements: iphone, at&t sim card, credit card, wi fi hot spot, another phone IMEI number

1) buy an AT&T sim card with 3g in ebay US site: buy sim card in ebay

2) activate your new sim card in the at&t gophone website, when activating will ask your IMEI number from your phone. If you enter your iphone number it won’t work. I called customer service and they said the sim card cannot be activated in iphones with prepaid. So you have to enter an IMEI from another phone. I use my blackberry IMEI. 3) an email will be sent with your new phone number and successful notice of activation. as well your password to create an account. keep that information handy.

3) You need to be in USA soil to try it out. put the sim card in your iphone until you see you have AT&T signal.

4) Once you see your AT&T network connects to your phone go to this page to register your account. enter your password, and a new one will be sent via SMS to your phone. login to your account and refill your sim card. You will need to refill your phone with a minimum of $15 (that will last for 30 days) and then add data (100mb for 19.99$ for 30 days). (you need a valid credit card to refill, I used my Canadian credit card and worked well).

5) you will receive confirmation about your data plan has been activated, however need to tweak the iphone to work with the AT&T network and APN. go to this website from your iphone and a wi-fi connection. http://www.unlockit.co.nz/ and follow the instructions on the screen to create a new connection for AT&T network.

voilá ! you have 100mb of 3G data in the USA for 30 days to use with your iphone.
